The Dispensary

SAINT MARY'S ORTHODOX CHURCH OF DORMITION has a long tradition of providing support and relief to the community. During the years of the recent unrest attempts were made to establish a medical clinic, however, they were unsuccessful. Following the return to normal conditions in the country, the attempt was renewed and with the help of the Social Action Committee that Archbishop Elias Audi formed, a dispensary, including a medical and dental clinic, was established.. The clinic was inaugurated on May 19, 1994 by His Eminence Metropolitan Elias Audi with the presence of Minister of Public Health, Mr. Marwan Hammade, the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Bishara Merhej, some state officials and a multitude of faithful from Ras Beirut, the Mseitbeh and Mazraa parishes.
At present 1800 families in West Beirut are registered with the dispensary. A majority of the registered families come from the Moslem community. The dispensary has eleven medical doctors with different specialties. The dispensary has a dental clinic and a small pharmacy. The staff consists of one social worker, a nurse, and a secretary. A pharmacist oversees the pharmacy. Among the activities of the social worker is a program for the needy elderly of the parish. The dispensary also organizes conferences on health matters.
